baseboards
Baseboards and transition moldings add a distinctive touch to your home and can sometimes be used to hide wiring. They come in a variety of styles, materials, thicknesses, and colors, some off the shelf and others available only by special order. I'll help you determine the best choices for your rooms, but you can also go online to sites like Google Images, Bing Images and Pinterest (type “baseboards and moldings” into the search bars) to preview a huge assortment of styles. bathroom vanities
I love building bathroom vanities, especially when I'm challenged to work with limited or oddly shaped spaces. Think about what you want: free standing or built-in? Style, material, color, drawers, cabinets, interior shelving, exterior hardware? I'll help you think through and ultimately decide what you want, but you can get started by viewing hundreds of variations on Pinterest, Google Images, Bing Images and other such sites. bookcases
Custom bookcases add warmth, beauty and value to just about any home, and they can be designed and built in limitless variations. Do you have a lot of books? Do you want the shelves to hold other things, large or small? Would you like the shelves to be fixed or adjustable? How about adding lighting or, if you want floor to ceiling shelves, a ladder? The photos above are just two examples. Visit my favorite websites, Pinterest and Google Images, to get hundreds of ideas. built-ins
Most homes, even small ones, have unused spaces that can be transformed into storage or work areas with custom built ins. Let me have a look at the space you have in mind and what you'd like to do with it. I'll make some additional suggestions, and together we'll come up with a plan featuring exactly the materials and features you want. closets
Built in shelves, drawers, and hang bars enable you to take full advantage of virtually every square inch of your closets, and you might be surprised at what you can do with even a limited budget. Tell me everything you'd like to have stored or organized in a given closet. I'll suggest configurations and materials that will meet your needs and wants, and then build to your choices. coffered ceilings
Coffered (embellished) ceilings bring additional texture, style and architectural interest to your home and may even increase its value. I can build in beams from which you can hang things (great for a chef's kitchen), recesses for decorative lighting, or lattice patterns consistent with the style of your home. If you have high ceilings, I can even build in hidden storage areas. Once you start imagining, you'll never think of ceilings the same way. crown molding
Crown moldings are a great way to add visual interest and value to your home. First step? Determining what size, thickness, design and color will work best for your space. A wide range of molding are available through special order, and if you're on a tight budget, I can help you achieve a distinct and beautiful look even using inexpensive, locally sourced materials. entertainment centers
Custom built entertainment or media centers are a great way to house your flat screen TV, speakers, and ancillary equipment and digital devices all in one beautiful, functional, space saving unit. I can design yours to best utilize your available space, and build it so that all the electrical and extension cords are easy to access but out of sight. fireplace mantles
A custom built fireplace mantel is a great way to add a warm and unique designer touch to your home, while also accommodating various ways of using it. I can build it in any style, using beautiful hardwoods such as maple, beech, cherry or black walnut, or inexpensive woods that you can paint and stencil. I can also build in hidden channels so you can invisibly pass electrical wires up and around the mantel to reach another part of the room. home bars
If you love to entertain, a custom built home bar is a great way to reduce trips to the kitchen and add a fun and distinctive feature to gatherings. I can build you a bar for indoor or outdoor use, including wine or hanging stem glass racks, room for a mini fridge, and drawers and cabinets in any configuration you like. kitchen cabinets
Imagine being able to use every inch of the kitchen space you have, including odd little recesses or angles. Further imagine building in convenience features like lazy susans, retractable shelves, spice racks, extendable work surfaces, and even detachable counter cabinets on wheels. With this type of project, I'll ask you how you actually use your kitchen (i.e., do you bake a lot, prepare complex dishes, cook for large parties, use a lot of countertop appliances?) so I can design exactly the right configuration of cabinets for you in exactly the materials and style you like. pantries
shelving
Custom shelving is a great way to expand the usefulness of every room in your home, while also bringing greater visual interest and value to it. Think about how you could use more shelving for a child's room, a garage, an attic, a laundry room, or a hobby workspace. I can build adjustable or fixed shelving to fit any space, using either beautiful hardwoods or inexpensive boards that can be painted as you wish. walk in closets
Custom built walk-in closets are one of the most valuable assets you can add to your home. There is no limit to the materials, features, and configurations you can choose to exactly suit your needs, and should you decide to sell your house at some future point, potential buyers will be thrilled when they open that closet door. pergola construction
Pergolas are any structures that cover some part of an outdoor space. Do you like to barbecue? I can design and build a pergola that will help protect your grill or make it more pleasant to eat outdoors. Would you like shade or protection from the rain for your deck? No problem. However you use it, a pergola can bring a unique and distinctive look to your outdoor space while adding value to your home. trellis construction
Part of the fun of building a trellis is the planning that goes into it. I'll help you think about its height and width in relation to your yard, its design in relation to the style of your home, the wood in relation to your local climate and weather, and even the matrix of openings in relation to the types of plants or vines you'll want to train up and over it. If you want to include a seat, bench or swing, I can build that into it, as well. trimwork
Trim work is finish carpentry, the wood embellishments that are used to conceal the joints or rough surfaces between the walls and the floors, ceilings, doors, and windows of your home. They add a more polished look to virtually any room and can add value to your home. Trim work materials vary by size, thickness, design, color and cost, with the least expensive being easily sourced locally, and the more elaborate or distinctive ones requiring special order. Once I see your home and get a sense of your budget, I can help you decide which materials to buy, and then install and paint them exactly as you wish. wainscoting
Wainscoting is wood paneling and crown molding that covers the lower part of the walls of a room. It's often used in mudrooms, kitchens, stairways, hallways and other frequently used areas to protect the walls from moisture, dings, scuffs and marks; but it is also used simply to add texture, style and beauty to virtually any room. Wainscoting is most often made of wood, but is also available today in synthetic materials. I'll help you choose the wainscoting best suited to your home decor and budget, of course. WORKSTATIONS & HOBBY ROOMS
Perhaps no other part of your home benefits more from customization than your home office or hobby room. To ensure that the built-ins you want are both comfortable and practical, I'll ask you questions:
SPECIAL PROJECTS
Let's get creative. Think of something you'd love to have made in wood. I can build you a birdhouse, doghouse, playhouse, shed, platform deck, coat rack, wine rack, foot locker... Just about anything, as long as the parts can fit in my van for assembly at your home. Think about the type of wood you'd like, too: brown maple, cherry, hickory, mahogany, oak, pine, rosewood... Many varieties can be sourced locally, and I can special order any others. To get ideas for any of the projects above, visit Pinterest, Google Images, Bing Images, and other such sites to see hundreds of idea-inspiring photos.

exterior restorations & repairs
Every home exterior takes a beating from the weather, and the damage can affect not only the appearance and value of your home, but your safety, as well. Hi, I'm Barney Thomas.
When you hire an experienced carpenter, you expect to get intelligent design, precision craftsmanship, optimal functionality, and lasting beauty in whatever you want built or repaired. When you hire me, you get all those qualities and something more: a great experience that will make you smile every time you look at my finished work. With custom carpentry jobs, creating that experience begins with a shared vision. Tell me what you have in mind for your attic shelving. What problems do you want solved with that home office built-in or hobby room closet? How will you use your new backyard bar or pergola? Once I know your goals, we'll brainstorm ideas for configurations, materials, and details that will guide me in building exactly what you need and want. You'll smile every time you look at the finished product, not just because it's well-built and good looking, but also because it fits you and feels good to use. With home repair jobs, creating a good experience begins with good detective work. If you’ve got wood rot, drywall damage, or a leaky shed, for instance, I’ll track down the cause of the problem (which may be hidden beneath a surface) before recommending a repair strategy. If there are multiple repair options, I’ll explain the pros and cons of each, but I'll only recommend solutions that will fully resolve the problem. In the end, you won’t be able to tell that any damage ever occurred; and you’ll have peace of mind that it won't occur again. There are other ways I strive to create a good experience for you. I show up on time. I work efficiently. I explain what I'm doing and why I'm doing it, and more. See my promises to learn more about the commitments I'll make to you. Call or e-mail me today to schedule an initial consultation. I'll be happy to talk with you about your custom carpentry or home repair needs without charge. I look forward to helping you. -- Barney Thomas
"Any homeowner will be lucky to get Barney. He's honest, ethical, and exceptionally good at what he does. In my case, he removed a badly rotted three-panel door, repaired the entire substructure and frame, installed a brand new door with adjoining sidelights, and meticulously painted it inside and out. It was a very challenging undertaking and he pulled it off beautifully. I've brought Barney back several times for other work and have always been delighted with the results." "I hired Barney to take down a wall between my kitchen and hallway to open up the floor plan... It wasn't a job I was comfortable doing on my own since it required a large amount of material removal, and squaring things up to make sure the trim would lay flat. Barney arrived when he promised, completed the job on time, and I could not be happier with the result. Plus, he tented everything to keep the rest of my home clean during the work!." "I hired Barney to demolish my bathroom floor and install a sink and toilet (after removing the old ones). He was polite, communicative, had good advice, and produced an excellent work product. The toilet was leaking slightly after it was installed, but Barney did not leave until the issue was completely fixed. I would recommend him highly. He is honest about his skills and is reasonably priced." |
